During the Agrarian Revolutionary War (July 1927-July 1937), Chen Yun joined in the fight and worked in Jiangxi, and served as the Secretary of both the Party and Youth League of All-China Federation of Trade Unions and continued to lead the work of the CPC Central Committee and All-China Federation of Trade Unions. At the Fifth Plenary Session of the 6th CPC Central Committee, he was elected as a member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and a member of the Standing Committee in January 1934, and Minister of the Work Department in White Areas (Kuomintang-controlled areas during the Second Revolutionary Civil War, 1927-1937). In that summer, Chen Yun led the production of military supplies at Jiangxi Central Soviet Area. In striving to build the Central Revolutionary Base Area, he made unwavering efforts in the economic struggles in White Areas and the development of All-China Federation of Trade Unions. By drawing on the experiences in Jiangxi Central Soviet Area, he wrote and issued plenty of articles relevant to workers’ economic struggle in Jiangxi Central Soviet Area and the efforts of counter-left deviation in economic struggle, making significant historic contributions to the liberation of the Chinese people and the Soviet Movement. Around the end of 1950s, Chen Yun paid a visit to Jiangxi for investigation into military production and showed concern for the economic development of the province. During the Cultural Revolution, he was persecuted by Lin Biao and Jiang Qing Counter-Revolutionary Cliques (political factions mainly composed of Chinese Communist Party officials) and then banished to work in Jiangxi Petrochemical Machinery Factory. Caught in the adversity, however, he personally visited factories, schools and rural areas to investigate industrial and agricultural production, reform in education and other sectors, regardless of his failing health and daunting weather. With his dedication, Chen Yun made a profound impression on Jiangxi people and won their admiration and respect.

Together with the Party Committee of Jiangxi Boiler & Petrochemical Machinery United Co., Ltd., the Party History Material Collection Committee, CPC Jiangxi Provincial Committee collated and studied on the historical materials and compiled Chen Yun in Jiangxi, for the sake of helping people get better knowledge of Chen Yun’s legends in Jiangxi, and encouraging them to learn from his great mind peculiar to proletarian revolutionary and his noble character of seeking truth from facts. This book embraces documentary and commemorative articles detailing Chen Yun’s fight, work and daily life in Jiangxi around the founding of the PRC, and incorporated the Chronicle of Chen Yun in Jiangxi and three papers themed on the study on Chen’s life stories and thought during the Period of the Central Soviet Areas.
