Chen Yun was born in a poor family, and had tasted hardship in his childhood. He joined the CPC in 1925. During the Agrarian Revolutionary War, he was one of the leaders of labor movement and peasant movement.   He was elected as a member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee at the Fifth Plenary Session of the 6th CPC Central Committee and a member of the Standing Committee. He was a strong supporter of Mao Zedong’s correct ideas at the Zunyi Meeting. During the Chinese People's War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression, he was the Minister of the Organization Department of the CPC Central Committee for 7 years, and made great contributions to party building from theory to practice. In June 1945, he was elected as a member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee at the First Plenary Session of the 7th CPC Central Committee. In August of the same year, he was appointed as an alternate member of the Secretariat of the CPC Central Committee. During the period of the People’s Liberation War, he successively held the posts of the Deputy Secretary of the Northeast Bureau of the CPC Central Committee, the Deputy Political Commissar of the Northeast Democratic Allied Army, the Deputy Political Commissar of the Northeast Military Area Command, and Director of the Northeast Finance and Economy Committee, thus making great contributions to the liberation and economic recovery of the whole Northeast China.
