This is Chen Yun’s handwriting wrote at the age of 85 to Yu Ruomu and now is a collection of the Memorial. The well-preserved handwriting is on a piece of white Xuan paper (a kind of paper originating in ancient China used for writing and painting) of 64 cm long and 34 cm wide. Comrade Chen started to practice calligraphy at the age of 80. In his tight schedule, forenoons were fixed for calligraphy. Regardless of his age, Chen kept practicing calligraphy in front of a desk with full concentration and tranquility every forenoon until 90 years old. The practice time used to be half an hour, however, it was reduced to 20 minutes later at the suggestion of doctors at the consideration of his health. The time was ultimately limited to 10 minutes. No matter how short the time was, Chen was always immersed in practicing. Chen was very modest, and often asked family members and staff for deficiencies of his calligraphy for improvement.
It was the most efficient way for him to strength his mind and body and to conquer the disease.
